While talking about the AirDroid for Android the other day, we discussed how you can use the application to manage your phone’s data and files from your PC using a WiFi connection. But what if you want it the other way? What if you wanted to access a folder on your Windows PC on your phone and edit the files present in it?






Of course using an online backup tool is an option but you might not want to put a folder there just because of the purpose of sharing on your phone. You should be able to access it directly through WiFi, right?
You all probably know about file sharing in Windows and how it can be used to work on files hosted on different computers using a network connection (LAN or WiFi). Today we will see to use the same principle of file sharing and access files shared on your Windows PC on your Android.
Let me first show you how you can share a particular folder on Windows. And then we will move to the Android part of the process.

Sharing folders on Windows 7

Step 1: Right-click on the folder you want to share on your Windows and click on Propertiesto open the folder properties. Navigate to the Sharing tab and click on the Share button to open the File Sharing window.

Step 2: On the File Sharing window, you will be asked to enter the name of the group you want to share the folder with. Write Everyone and click on the Add button. You may give Read or Read/Write permission to the share access depending on your needs. Once you are done, click on the Share button.

Step 3: Now you can opt for two types of sharing, either password protected or open. If you are on a secure home network, I would recommend you go for the open file sharing as it makes things a bit easier. But if you are on an unsecured WiFi network, you must go for the password protected sharing.
To change these settings, navigate to Control Panel —> Network and Sharing Center. Here click on the link Change advanced settings  on the left hand sidebar to open Advance sharing settings. Scroll down to the end of the page to find the Password protected sharing option, choose a password and save the settings.






















Cool Tip: To see list of all the folders you have shared on your computer, right click on the Computer icon in the start menu and click on Manage. Having done that, click on the Shared Folders—>Shares to list all the folders shared on your computer.


You may share any number of folders you want to access on your Android.
So that was all we needed on the Windows side of the equation. Now let us configure settings on the Android.

Accessing Shared Folders on Android

Step 1: Download and install ES File Explorer on your Android device. It’s an amazing and one of the most acclaimed file managers for Android. It works on all the devices running on Android version 1.6 and above. One of the features of ES File Explorer is that it allows you to access your Home PC on WiFI via Server Message Block (SMB).
Step 2: Once you have downloaded the app, launch it. The home screen will display all the files and folders that are on your SD card. Swipe your finger to the left on the screen to move to navigate to the right to the LAN share screen. Also make sure both your computer and your Android phones are connected to the same network.





















Step 3: Touch the button New  on the top bar to add a new server (your computer in this case).


Step 4: Here leave the Domain field empty and do one of the following tasks depending upon your sharing security.
a) If you have opted for non-password protected sharing, enter the IP address of your computer (use the command ipconfig on the command prompt of your computer to know your IP) and check the anonymous option. Give your server an alias to identify if (it’s useful when you are using the app to access shared folders on different computer) and press the OK button to add the server.



b) For those who have enabled the password protected sharing option, do not check the anonymous option, instead provide the username and password you use to login to Windows and add the server.

 



That’s all, you can now browse through all the files and folders that are shared on the computer on your Android. That’s not all, depending upon the type of sharing privileges you have granted on Windows, you can do tasks such as:
  • Open and edit text files, documents and save the changes directly without downloading the files on your phone.
  • Copy a file from your computer to your phone easily. You can also modify and delete the files on your computer from your Android.
  • You can view almost all the files on your Android provided you have a supported viewer for the specific file type.
  • If you have write access to the shared folder on Windows, you can copy files and folders from Android to computer as well.

Enter the password AirDroid has generated for you and voila! you get a wonderful dashboard from where you can view and control almost any gamut of your Android smartphone.
By default, on the right-hand side you can see the details of the phone you have connected, on top there’s a search app tool and on the left-hand side are the icons to control contacts, messages, files, etc on your Android.

All the elements on the main screen can be dragged and dropped, and thus you can customize it as per your needs. The application gives you the power to manage files, wield messages and contacts, view and transfer photos, listen and manage music, install and uninstall applications. I love to play games on my Android smartphone and I use my 3G connection to download them. But some games require you to connect using Wi-Fi before you can download them. Previously, I didn’t have a Wi-Fi router in my house, and neither did my smartphone support Ad-Hoc network (until you root it and apply a patch), and that was the reason I was looking for a way to create a virtual access point using my laptop that could then share the internet wirelessly.
There are some tools like Connectify and Virtual Router that claim to provide a solution to the above problem but to me they created additional problems rather than solving the one I have. Soon after I installed Connectify, I started having random crashes with the infamous Blue Screen Of Death.
Luckily I came across a web service called Virtual Access Point (found on Raymond’s blog) that offers an easy solution using the built-in Virtual Wi-Fi technology in Windows 7. So let’s see how we can create a virtual access point and share the internet connection without breaking a sweat.
To begin, visit Virtual Access Point and type in a SSID (any name) and a password (minimum eight characters) and click on the button Turn On Soft AP. Also make sure you have the latest version of Java Runtime Environment installed on your system because it needs Java to work

When the Virtual Access Point page asks you whether you want to run the Java Runtime Environment on the page, check the always trust option and click on the Run Button. The tool will now create a virtual wireless network connection using the Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter.




















Once the access point is up and running it’s now time to share the internet connection. To share the internet connection to the newly created access point open Control Panel—>Network and Internet—>Network Connections. You can also open it directly using the link present on the Virtual Access Point home page right after you create a new access point.














Now right-click on the newly created virtual adapter and click Properties.











Under the Sharing tab check the option Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection and select the connection you want to share. Now click on the OK button and confirm your actions.























Your internet connection will be shared instantly. I tested the newly created access point on my smartphone and I could connect to the internet without any problem.


























Once you are done, click on Turn Off Soft AP button on the Virtual Access Point page.
From now on, whenever you create the virtual access point, the internet will be shared by default. If anytime in the future you want to revoke the sharing on the internet, you can do that by changing the properties of the virtual adapter.

To send data from one computer to another, you either need wires to connect them, or you need to purchase a router so that you can transfer data wirelessly.
However, if your laptop or desktop computer has a wireless network card then it could be connected to another PC in your house, provided the other one has wireless capabilities too. And you don’t need a router to establish this connection. This is known as an ad-hoc network connection.
Here are the steps to setup an ad-hoc home wireless network in Windows Vista.
1. Go to Control panel and click on Network and Sharing center icon.












2. On the left side under Tasks, click on “Set up a connection or network” option.









3. Now click on  “Set up a wireless as hoc (computer to computer) network”.










4. Click on Next button.










5. Now give a name to your network. The default security type should be WPA2-Personal. Let it be like that  because WPA2 is much better than WEP when it comes to wireless network security. Choose a security passphrase, click on save network if you intend to use this network again, and hit next.









Your network will be build successfully. Now you can connect any Wi-Fi enabled device to your computer. If you search for available wireless networks, you will find a newly built network  (“My network” in this case) on your device.
In this way you can access and transfer data between your wi-fi enabled phone, printer, laptop and computer. A simple and easy method to setup an ad-hoc network

Anyone will attest to the fact that there is a list of simple features missing from the formidable iTunes. Its inability to automatically upload new music to your library has been at the top of my personal list. It wasn’t until recently that I became aware that this feature has been available since iTunes 9! (we are now on version 10).
I figure that if I, a self-proclaimed tech-a-holic, had no idea that automatic uploading from a watched folder in iTunes was possible, there must be other people out there who are just as clueless as I once was. And so I wrote this quick guide.
Previously, when you downloaded that totally rad new album via BitTorrent you would have to drag and drop it into iTunes. Boring! This outdated method of updating your music library is atrocious, and every other media player in this big, wide world is capable of auto-updating.
Well, there is actually a folder located inside your iTunes Media folder labeledAutomatically Add to iTunes.

OSX: ~ / Music / iTunes / iTunes Media / Automatically Add to iTunes /
Windows: C:\Users\Your Username\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Automatically Add to iTunes\).
This aforementioned folder is watched by iTunes and any new music that’s added to this folder is automatically added to your iTunes library. It’s like magic! I quivered with glee when I first saw it happen, and I am not embarrassed to say that.
